SPIFF: What is your most vivid movie memory? Why and when have you decided to become filmmaker?
PM: The first film I remember seeing little was The Disney Jungle Book. Pretty young at around 13, I started making very short films in super8.
SPIFF: At SPIFF, movies are divided by genre. What is your favorite and why?
PM: The fantastic, the terrifying. These are the kinds of movies that watered my adolescence / young adult.
SPIFF: How did you come up with the idea for your film Countryside?
PM: I tried to make a film in the genre that I liked. But above all a film that shuffles the cards at the start with a surprising and poignant ending.
SPIFF: Can you please list advantages and disadvantages of working on short films?
PM: There are mainly advantages to making short films, fast production and minimal funding. If you can motivate the right people, it is possible to set up a project at a lower cost, which is much more difficult over a long period. As for the disadvantages, have little time to bring the characters to life and give them body.
SPIFF: Please, list your favourite directors and films. Why do you prefer them?
PM: The subject is vast. There are many. But if I have to choose. Sam Raimi for Evil dead II. Ridley Scott for Alien and Blade runner. David Fincher for Seven and his other films :). Steven Spielberg for Jurrasic park. And I like Bekmambetov’s Wanted a lot. I like these movies because they are genre films in the broadest sense of the term.
SPIFF: What would you like to tell the audience of your film in Russia at SPIFF?
PM: I’m sorry I can’t be with you. I am happy that my film is shown at SPIFF, I hope that the Russian public will enjoy watching it and that they will keep a good memory of it.
